Dueck Shares Story, Challenges Rotarians

Ryan Dueck was this week’s speaker at South Eastman Rotary. 
 
Dueck spoke on overcoming adversity and the importance of community.  In 2009 Dueck suffered a serious neck injury during a game of pick-up football.  The injury left the former Manitoba Bison sidelined and in pain for over five years, before a diagnosis revealed that he had in fact broken his neck and damaged three disks.  Now on the road to recovery following a surgery in Germany Dueck has learned the importance of not allowing ones circumstances define the rest of their lives.
 
In his presentation he spoke about the three truths of adversity:
  1. Point of resilience
The turning point of one’s in counter with adversity where a choice is made.
 
  1. The world’s worst question
Dueck explained how adversity leaves us wondering ‘Why Me’ and challenged us to begin to think ‘what next’.
 
  1. Fate doesn’t wait, Destiny Does
Dueck informed us that even though we can’t determine everything that happens in our lives we can choose how to react.
 
Finally, he closed with a message to Rotarians, encouraging us to build on our internal community and strengthen relationships within in order to best serve those around us.
