A Warm Welcome and Civic Greetings
Emceed by new Rotarian Kris Ontong, a prominent leader from the local Filipino-Canadian community, the luncheon opened with heartfelt welcome remarks that set the tone for an afternoon of gratitude, reflection, and shared purpose. Mayor Earl Funk of the City of Steinbach offered greetings on behalf of the city, emphasizing the city's support for Rotary's ongoing community efforts. Peter Tonge, the Governor of Rotary District 5550, followed with a message that underscored Rotary’s commitment to service both locally and globally.
A Lunch with a Purpose
After saying Rotary Grace, the luncheon began. The Ladies Auxiliary of the Mennonite Heritage Village graciously served a delicious meal, offering guests a taste of traditional Mennonite hospitality. As everyone enjoyed their meal, a video presentation played, featuring a touching dance performance by Guatemalan schoolchildren, recorded during Rotarians Leonard Klassen and George Penner’s visit to the country. Their trip to Guatemala highlighted the Ripple Effect program, which funds educational initiatives in the region, bringing tangible proof of Rotary's impact abroad.
Recognizing Valued Sponsors
The event would not have been possible without the generosity of its sponsors, who were recognized for their contributions. The PLATINUM Sponsors, who donated over $2,500, included Alan & Simone Penner, Steinbach Hatchery & Feeds, Milton Penner, and PBX Truck. GOLD Sponsors, each donating $1,000, included Hanover School Division and Steinbach Credit Union. Their contributions underscored the importance of collaboration between businesses, individuals, and organizations to make a difference in the community.
Honouring Local Partnerships for the DARE Program
After lunch, Constable Dennis Redikop from the local RCMP and Assistant Superintendent Colin Campbell of the Hanover School Division were invited to the stage. Joined by Rotary Club President Cornie Petkau, they received commemorative Rotary pins as a symbol of appreciation for their partnership with the DARE program. Constable Redikop gave a short, heartfelt speech, particularly thanking Campbell for his years of dedication to the program, noting that Campbell will soon take on the role of Superintendent in the Seine River School Division. Campbell, in turn, introduced three seventh-grade students from Clearspring Middle School who shared essays about the positive influence of the DARE program in helping them make healthy, responsible choices. Their presentations resonated with attendees, reinforcing the program's role in empowering youth in the community.
Keynote Address: “Overcoming Fear for Success”
The keynote speaker, Luke Penner—Canada's National Aerobatics Champion and Chief Flight Instructor at Harv's Air—delivered a powerful speech titled "Overcoming Fear for Success." Through stories, photographs, and video clips, Penner shared his journey from novice flight student to national aerobatics champion, revealing the personal challenges he faced in finding his path beyond the accomplishments of his father and brother. His inspiring message of resilience and determination captivated the audience, drawing applause. As a gesture of gratitude, the Rotary Club of South Eastman pledged to donate to Penner’s charity of choice -- the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada, for their programs encouraging young people to explore aviation.
A Reminder of Purpose
Before concluding the event, attendees were encouraged to consider supporting the DARE program further, inspired by the courage and impact shared by the afternoon’s speakers.
A Resounding Success
With 75 guests in attendance and roughly $21,000 raised, the Annual Fundraiser Luncheon of the Rotary Club of South Eastman was a celebration of community spirit, underscoring the collective power of service and partnership. The funds will benefit local youth through the DARE program and support educational initiatives abroad via the Ripple Effect project, continuing Rotary's tradition of making a meaningful difference.
